About
Ahmed Tarek al-Ahwal is part of the Urban Footprints Project as a research assistant under the Project Lead, Dr. Cathrin Zengerling. The project is set within the Junior Professorship for “Transformation to Sustainable Energy Systems” at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg. He works on content analysis, interview planning and conducting, as well as organizing the project's concluding conference.
His inclusion in the research project is based on his experience as an independent researcher in the fields of urban metabolism, urban water management, public space justice, and land governance. In addition to his education as an architect he draws from his master's in the field of urban management and development from the Institute of Housing and Urban Development studies in Rotterdam. His current focus is to study challenges to applying compact city principles in developing contexts.

Research areas
Within the research topic he is interested in looking into the power of city level strategies to push for compact cities, against economic and political challenges. In working towards this, his current areas of research include urban density, land policy, land markets and climate.
